LUBRICATION
SERVICE INTERVALS
Inspect fluid level every 15,000 miles or 12 months. If under severe usage, change fluid every 30,000 miles or 24 months.
CHECKING FLUID LEVEL
Transmission
1. Check fluid with engine and transmission at normal operating temperature. With vehicle standing level and at idle, shift transmission through all positions and return to Park.
2. Clean area around dipstick. Remove dipstick, wipe clean, insert and withdraw. Level should be between "H" and "L" marks. If level is not as indicated, add fluid as necessary.
3. Dipstick on some models may be marked with HOT and COLD ranges. Use COLD range if fluid is 86-122°F (30-50°C) and vehicle was not driven before checking level.
NOTE: Normal fluid should be clear with a Pink color and should not have a strong burnt odor.
RECOMMENDED FLUID
- Transmission: Dexron-II ATF.
TRANSMISSION REFILL CAPACITIES
- 240SX (RE4R01A): 8.8 (8.3) Qts. (L) (Specification includes torque converter capacity.)
DRAINING AND REFILLING
Transmission
1. Loosen oil pan bolts. Allow ATF to drain. Remove pan. Thoroughly clean pan and screen. If replacing screen, tighten bolts to specification.
2. Install pan using NEW gasket. Tighten pan bolts to specification. Add fluid through fill tube. Warm transmission to normal operating temperature. Shift transmission through all gears and return to Park. Check fluid level. Add fluid as necessary.
ADJUSTMENTS
NOTE: Band adjustments are not part of on-vehicle adjustment procedures. Band adjustments should only be performed during bench inspection or overhaul.
KICKDOWN SWITCH
1. At throttle body, loosen accelerator cable lock nut. Tighten accelerator cable adjusting nut until throttle just starts to open. Back off adjusting nut 1 1/2 - 2 turns. Tighten lock nut.
2. Kickdown switch is located at top of accelerator pedal on mounting bracket. With pedal fully depressed, use feeler gauge to measure clearance between rubber stopper on accelerator pedal and threaded portion of kickdown switch.
3. If clearance is not .012-.039" (0.3-1.0 mm), loosen switch lock nut. Adjust clearance as necessary. Tighten lock nut.
CAUTION: If switch closes too early (accelerator pedal not fully depressed), downshift will occur at part throttle.
GEARSHIFT LINKAGE
NOTE: Move shift lever through all gear positions. If each detent cannot be felt and shift lever pointer does not align with each position indicator, adjust gearshift linkage.
1. Place shift lever in Park. Loosen lock nuts on rod. See Fig. 1 . While pulling selector lever toward Reverse (without pushing shifter release button), tighten lock nut "X" until it touches trunnion.
2. Back off lock nut "X" one turn. Tighten lock nut "Y" to 97-132 INCH lbs. (11-15 N.m). Recheck shift lever positions, ensuring shift lever moves smoothly.

NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH
1. Neutral safety switch operates back-up lights and prevents starting except in "P" and "N" positions. To adjust, place shift lever in "N" position. Ensure transmission is in Neutral (transmission shift shaft lever should be in vertical position). See Fig. 2 .
2. Loosen neutral safety switch bolts. Rotate switch until correct size alignment pin can be inserted through shift shaft lever and switch arm. Tighten neutral safety switch bolts and remove pin.
3. Check continuity through starter circuit of neutral safety switch. Continuity should exist only in Neutral and Park positions
NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH ALIGNMENT PIN
- All Models: .16 (4.0) In. (mm)

TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
- Oil Pan Bolts (Oil is drained by loosening oil pan bolts.): 44-71 (5-8) INCH Lbs. (N.m)
- Oil Screen Bolts: 62-80 (7-9) INCH Lbs. (N.m)
