Mazda RX-7 Power Door and Trunk Locks: actuator, timer and more
Mazda RX7 1993-1995 FD3S
When driver's door is locked or unlocked using key or door lock button/knob, all other doors are automatically locked or unlocked by an electric actuator. Door lock timer unit controls door lock actuator based on position of door lock link switch (part of door lock mechanism).
ELECTRICAL COMPONENT LOCATIONS
- Central Processing Unit: Behind Left Kick Panel, On Joint Box
- Door Lock Timer Unit: Behind Left Kick Panel, Near Door
COMPONENT TESTING
DOOR LOCK LINK SWITCH
Remove door trim panel. Disconnect door lock link switch connector. Ensure continuity exists between indicated door lock link switch connector terminals with switch in specified position. If continuity does not exist, replace door lock link switch.
DOOR LOCK LINK SWITCH CONTINUITY TEST
- Locked: Green/Yellow and Black
- Unlocked: Green/Red and Black
DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR
2-Pin Connector
Remove door trim panel. Disconnect door lock actuator connector. Apply battery voltage and ground across door lock actuator connector terminals. Reverse polarity across terminals to move door lock actuator in opposite direction. Replace door lock actuator if it does not operate.
4-Pin Or 6-Pin Connectors
Remove door trim panel. Disconnect door lock actuator connector. Apply battery voltage across the following terminals of door lock actuator connector. Reverse polarity across terminals to move door lock actuator in opposite direction. Replace door lock actuator if it does not operate.
- Orange wire and Green wire terminals.
DOOR LOCK TIMER UNIT
Leave door lock timer unit connector attached. Measure voltage at the following terminals of door lock timer unit connector (backprobe connector). If voltage is not as specified, check circuit (including component, if applicable). If circuit is okay, replace door lock timer unit.
Black Wire (To Ground)
Voltage should not exist under any conditions.
Blue Wire (To DOOR LOCK Fuse)
Battery voltage should exist under all conditions.
Green/Red Wire (To Door Lock Link Switch)
With door unlocked, no voltage should exist. With door locked, battery voltage should exist.
Green/Yellow Wire (To Door Lock Link Switch)
With door locked, no voltage should exist. With door unlocked, battery voltage should exist.
Green Wire (To Door Lock Actuator)
With door locked, battery voltage should exist. With door unlocked, no voltage should exist.
Orange Wire (To Door Lock Actuator)
With door unlocked, battery voltage should exist. With door locked, no voltage should exist.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
Check
fuse and/or
circuit breaker. If fuse and/or circuit breaker is good, check individual components.
PASSENGER'S POWER DOOR LOCK INOPERATIVE
1. Check
DOOR LOCK fuse (10-amp). If fuse is good, go to next step. If fuse is blown, repair wiring if necessary and replace fuse.
2. Remove driver's kick panel. Check Blue wire at power door lock timer unit for battery voltage. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair Blue wire as necessary.
3. Disconnect power door lock timer unit harness connector. Check for continuity between connector Black wire terminal and ground. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair Black wire as necessary.
4. Check Green/Yellow and Green/Red wires at harness connector for continuity to ground with power door lock in indicated positions. If continuity is as specified, go to step 7). If continuity is not as specified, go to next step.
POWER DOOR LOCK TIMER UNIT CONTINUITY TEST
- Locked: Green/Red Wire
- Unlocked: Green/Yellow Wire
5. Remove driver's door trim panel. Disconnect door lock link switch harness connector. Check for continuity between Black wire at connector and ground. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair Black wire between door lock link switch and ground.
6. Check for continuity at lock link switch harness connector. If continuity is as specified, repair wiring harness as necessary. If continuity is
not as specified, replace door lock link switch.
DOOR LOCK LINK SWITCH CONTINUITY TEST
- Locked: Black and Green/Yellow
- Unlocked: Black and Green/Red
7. Measure voltage of Green wire at door lock actuator connector while moving lock knob from unlock to lock position. Voltage should indicate zero volts, go to battery voltage, and return to zero volts. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, repair Green wire.
8. Measure voltage of Orange Wire at door lock actuator connector while moving lock knob from unlock to lock position. Voltage should indicate zero volts, go to battery voltage, and return to zero volts. If voltage is not as specified, repair Orange wire.
