Engine Performance Testing with Codes
SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM
HARD FAILURES
Hard failures cause Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) to illuminate and remain on until the malfunction is repaired. If light comes on and remains on (light may flash) during vehicle operation, cause of malfunction must be determined using trouble code charts. See TROUBLE CODE CHARTS . If a sensor fails, Engine Control Module (ECM) will use a substitute value in its calculations to continue engine operation. In this condition, vehicle is functional, but loss of good driveability will most likely be encountered.
INTERMITTENT FAILURES
Intermittent failures may cause Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) to flicker or illuminate and go out after the intermittent fault goes away. Corresponding trouble code, however, will be retained in Engine Control Module (ECM) memory. If related fault does not reoccur within a certain time frame, related trouble code will be erased from ECM memory. Intermittent failures may be caused by sensor, connector or wiring related problems.
RETRIEVING CODES
Trouble Code Access Using Test Equipment
1. Use Self Diagnostic Checker (49 H018 9A1) and System Selector (49 B019 9A0) to retrieve trouble codes. Connect one lead of self diagnostic checker to ground and the other to system selector. Connect system selector to data link connector.
2. With ignition on and engine off, verify No. 88 flashes on display and buzzer sounds for 3 seconds. If No. 88 does not flash, check main relay, power supply circuit, and connector wiring. Repair or replace as necessary. If No. 88 flashes and buzzer sounds for more than 20 seconds, check for short circuit between ECM terminal 1F and data link connector. Replace ECM as necessary and reconnect test equipment.
3. Note trouble codes. If more than one code is present, codes will be displayed in numerical order. Clear codes after repairs are complete.
Trouble Code Access Using Data Link Connector
1. If system selector is not available, connect a jumper wire between terminals TEN and GND of data link connector. See Fig. 1. Observe Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL). Note trouble codes.
2. If light remains on continuously, MIL circuit is grounded or ECM is defective. If more than one code is present, codes will be displayed in numerical order. Clear codes after repairs are complete.

CLEARING CODES
Disconnect negative battery cable for at least 20 seconds and depress brake pedal. Reconnect negative battery cable. Connect one lead of Self Diagnostic Checker (49 H018 9A1) to ground and the other to System Selector (49 B019 9A0). Connect system selector to data link connector. Turn ignition on for 6 seconds with engine off. Start and warm engine, then run at 2000 RPM for 3 minutes. Verify no codes are displayed.
