Undercarriage Quick test
GeneralAutoRepair
This quick test is a good way to find any loose parts that may need a closer inspection.
1.
Jack up front vehicle. FYI: Jacking positions may differ from vehicle to vehicle.
2. Use jack stands to suspend vehicle in position.
3. Under the vehicle grab tie rods, stabilizer bar, coil springs, etc. and rock back and forth. Any movement will indicate a closer inspection and a possible replacement. Possible culprits may be loose or corroded bolts or nuts, bushings that have gone soggy, etc. FYI: Some parts may have some play due to the manufacterer design. Check if within specification if that is the case.
While under vehicle also take note of any fluid present. Parts that look wet may indicate a leak. Oily residue may indicate a leaking oil seal. If wetness is near brakes then it may indicate brake fluid leaking from the brake system (Brake lines, master cylinder, brake caliper, etc). If green spots are located then this indicates that there is a leak in the cooling system. Any leaks would require immediate attention.
